September 2010:
"Junkets for Jesus." In Mother Jones, Jeff Sharlet details how Congressional "Family" members "travel the world to preach [Christianity] to dictators on the taxpayers' dime."
Peter Boyer of The New Yorker: "Inside C Street, Washington's Frat House for Jesus." Rachel Maddow characterizes Boyer's story as "a puff piece."
March 18: Rachel Maddow concentrates on the "C" Street trio of Stupak, Ensign & Sanford:
January 5, 2010: Rachel Maddow presses on in her reporting on The Family; here she talks to Bob Hunter, a member of the Family:
The Family Spends Your Money to Send MOCs to Africa to Spread the Gospel:
Once again Rachel Maddow & Jeff Sharlet further expose the Family & their taxpayer-funded missionary trips. Maddow throws in Lou Dobbs, too!
Marcy Wheeler gives the "C" Street story more legs when she points out that the No. 1 spokesman against healthcare reform -- Jim DeMint -- is also the No. 1 Family member who so far isn't implicated in a sex scandal. DeMint's opposition to providing affordable healthcare insurance to all Americans & his membership in the Family are not coincidental.
Jeff Sharlet writes a riveting article in Salon (July 21) about The Family that names names, including men who control your family's future well-being, like Senators Chuck "No Public Option" Grassley, Jim "Waterloo" DeMint, Jim "the Myth of Climate Change" Inhofe, Lindsey "Wise White Boy" Graham, & John "Shoot-'em-Up" Thune.
CW: Lisa Lerer of Politico writes a "balanced" report on the tax-exempt "C" Street home of the Family, citing rationale for its "fellowship" from its members, as if a secret society of Johns for Jesus was pretty normal & ethical.
The Totalitarianism of Christ: more from Maddow & Sharlet on Johns for Jesus at "C" Street:
Maureen Dowd connects the Sotomayor hearings to the "C" Street Family, hardly a stretch inasmuch as Dr. Tom Coburn features prominently in both, a Senator who has taken the art of hypocrisy to such a level Dowd credits him (and a few of his colleagues) a perfect Tartuffean.
The Las Vegas Sun prints an edited version of an interview of "C" Street Family expert Jeff Sharlet by KNPR-FM's David Berns. You can listen to the interview:
More "C" Street Sexcapades. This story belongs in The Soaps! John Bresnahan of Politico: former Rep. Chip Pickering, one of the secretive "C" Street gang of pseudo-religious fanatics, was carrying on an adulterous affair with a lady named Elizabeth Creekmore-Byrd, according to a suit filed by Pickering's now-ex-wife Leisha. The suit alleges Pickering carried on the affair in the "C" Street "church." "Pickering is now a lobbyist for Cellular South, a telecom company owned by Creekmore Byrd’s family." Of one thing you can be sure: if a man moralizes about the sexual habits of others, it's because the Devil is relentlessly making him do it. Here's Rachel Maddow's take:
Here's former "C" Street resident Chip Pickering in August 2007, telling the media he won't be running for re-election in 2008 because "he wants to spend more time with his wife, Leisha [pictured], and their five sons." Right.
